You cleaned the spot. It looked fine. Then a humid afternoon rolls around and the smell is back. Pet urine is one of the most frustrating carpet problems because what you see on the surface is only a small part of it.

Why the smell keeps coming back
When a pet urinates on carpet, the liquid does not stay in the fibers. It soaks through to the backing and into the pad underneath, and sometimes into the subfloor. The spot on top may be the size of your hand while the contaminated area below is several times larger.
As urine dries, it leaves behind salts and crystals. Bacteria feed on the residue and produce odor. When humidity rises, which in the Houston area is most of the year, the crystals absorb moisture and release the smell again. That is why odor often gets worse in summer or after rain.
What to do right away
- Blot, do not rub. Press white paper towels or a clean towel firmly into the spot. Stand on it to soak up as much as you can. Repeat until almost nothing transfers.
- Rinse with cool water. Pour a small amount of cool water on the area and blot again. Do not use hot water; heat can set protein stains.
- Use an enzyme cleaner. Enzyme products break down the urine compounds that bacteria feed on. Follow the label and give it time to work.
- Let it dry completely. Put a fan on it. Keep pets away until it is dry.
What to avoid
- Ammonia-based cleaners. Urine contains ammonia compounds, so these can smell like a marking spot to your pet.
- Too much water. Over-wetting spreads urine deeper into the pad.
- Steam or heat on fresh urine. Heat can bond the stain and odor to the fibers.
- Covering it with fragrance. Sprays mask odor for a day, then it comes back.

Truck-mounted hot water extraction then flushes the carpet and pulls out the loosened residue. It removes far more than a surface cleaning or rental machine can.
When the pad needs replacing
In severe cases where a pet has used one area for a long time, the pad under that area may be saturated beyond saving. Replacing a section of pad and sealing the subfloor is sometimes the only permanent fix. We will tell you honestly if we think that is needed.
What results to expect
Most pet odors can be removed with proper treatment. Stains are a little different. Urine is acidic, and over time it can permanently change the color of carpet dye. Old yellow stains often lighten significantly but may not disappear completely. We tell you what to expect before we start, so there are no surprises.

- Clean accidents immediately with an enzyme cleaner
- Take pets out on a consistent schedule
- Talk to your vet if a trained pet starts having accidents; it can be a health issue
