But with all the parties and dinners to be hosted, how can you keep those carpets, tile floors, and upholstery clean? We’ve come up with some tips and tricks to help keep your home clean this holiday season.
-Start with a welcome mat. Preferably one with bristles, which will help loosen any dirt and debris that may be on guests’ shoes.
Just inside the door, consider another mat, preferably washable, for any dirt and debris that may still be on the bottoms of shoes.
-Don’t be afraid to ask guests to remove their shoes! This is the best way to keep carpets clean. If you feel bad asking, consider keeping a shoe basket near the entrance. Guests will most likely remove their shoes and leave them in the basket, sparing you the awkward task of asking.
-Clean up spills right away! Where there’s food, there will be spills. And if you’re like us, the holidays mean LOTS of good food- many of which can leave nasty stains. As soon as something spills on the carpet, pick up solid pieces and begin to blot right away with a dry cloth or paper towel. Next, mix a solution of 2 cups warm water, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of dish detergent (such as Dawn). Apply a little solution at a time to the stain, and blot frequently. Repeat until the stain disappears.
